The society recognized the significance of the internet after its accessibility via a graphic interface. The development of the web browser increased the prevalence of the World Wide Web in the early 1990s. Although the development of the web occurred several years ago, its usage became active a few years ago. The emergence of the web and the internet has played a fundamental role in transforming society. Today, the internet has already infiltrated all the spheres of the corporate world including the political arena, social-cultural life, marketing economic and financial aspects of the business. Internet has become inescapable. It all starts by developing a website which entirely depends on the efficiency of the internet to record better performance. Indeed, the benefits associated with the emergence of web development are incomparable. It is a huge progress that has touched every aspect of human life.  The focus of this paper is to explore the evolution of web development by taking into account the technologies involved in ascertaining that the entire world has reaped the benefits of this novel technology. The paper will also denote the timelines upon which the development of various technologies occurred and which contributed in web development.

Evolution of Web Development

            By October 2017, approximately 8.4 billion devices were linked to the internet. This number is likely to increase to nearly 50 billion devices by the year 2020. The high increase in the number of devices capable of connecting to the internet and their diversity is an assurance that the internet will always remain the fastest evolving technology, in terms of utilization and derivation of financial revenues to the stakeholders. The internet has simplified the process of delivering exceptional services to any person located in any region of the world, which makes the society a global market. Internet has simplified the process of doing business. Besides the ordinary services including interaction and communication, internet has also changed the conventional way of buying and selling of stuff, as well as the financial transactions. Cyr, Ilsever, Bonanni, and Bowes (2004) postulate that with the age of the internet the interaction on the internet has contributed to other numerous changes. At the core of all these connections with the internet sits the web applications. Through the applications, the customers or rather the end users have been able to engage in effective correspondence with each other. That is, the web applications allow the user to send and receive correspondences in their desirable form. Furthermore, web apps have also assumed the role of retrieving and presenting data, which was initially the role undertaken by the internet. The section that follows detail some of the significant steps that the web development have undergone to ascertain that web applications correspond with the digital age that is fast changing.

            As the digital age emerged, the speed of connection was awful since it only allowed simple connections. As alleged by Carlos, Raquel, and Carlos (2009), the web developers during the 1990s were required to present data using text and other forms. Therefore, they were required to incorporate the following features while designing web applications. First, the web programmers were expected to include background images. They were also expected to put related information into columns. This would assist in customizing the websites. Another important feature that the web designers were required to include in the web development was the real-time traffic of the new visitors. It was deemed important to incorporate scrolling marques. Lastly, the efficiency of the web development would become a success if the web designers would integrate animated GIFs in the websites. With the inclusion of the graphic elements, the websites became more attractive.

None of these elements or rather inclusions enhanced the performance of these websites. In the late 1990s, the development of the websites had shifted from being business-focused into being use-based sites. This would allow the end users to interact with the web developers effectively. The introduction of the Flash software during this era was perceived as a game-changer in web development. However, in recent times, the use of flash software is slowly fading away. In nine years, 1999, Microsoft Company developed Ajax. As reckoned by Green and Pearson (2001), Ajax was the concept of applying JavaScript to boost the efficiency of the web browsers.

The knowledge of Ajax’s existence was still low since the developers had not yet approved the use of JavaScript in programming. By the year 2000, Djonov (2007) alleges that the web designers introduced the concept of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and its prevalence spread very fast. In web development, the role of the Cascading Style Sheet is to generate a framework of the website. The CSS mainly focused on presenting data visually while the HTML contained information in the text format. Furthermore, the CSS enabled the web developers to isolate the various forms of data presented on the website as well as its representation. It meant that the designers could present the same type of information on the website using various ways based on the CSS used. This was indeed a major transformation since it simplified the customization of the websites. Moreover, CSS also served as a guarantee that a website could load faster as well as ensure long-term maintenance.

            In 2004, Google Company developed Gmail. It was an application that was very responsive and the market accepted it without much hesitation. The acceptance of the Gmail was ascribed to the use of Ajax application. Both the Gmail and JavaScript apps were integrated into the Ajax program. During the same period, web designers emphasized JavaScript to enhance interactions and increase response in web development efforts. In 2005, the web developers launched the YouTube app. This was perceived as a huge milestone since it introduced the element of video streaming over the internet. It was an assurance that the usage of the internet would escalate. This would later pave way for more interactive and engaging services that are currently experienced on the internet. For example, it is possible to download online videos as well as obtain other forms of important information like e-learning platforms and entertainment websites.

            In 2006, the invention of JQuery by John Resign enhanced the receptiveness and usability of the websites. Today, John Resign is classified as one of the most competent web developers. In 2007, Apple Inc Company introduced the first model of iPhone. This was also perceived as a huge transition since the Web developers would focus on developing programs that would operate with the mobile phone platforms. It meant that the society would use mobile devices as their major source of connectivity with the internet. In 2008, Apple Inc., company also developed an App Store that would allow the users to download and install the iPhone apps. It also meant that web developers could be able to market and sell their programs. Today, the web developers have acknowledged the significance of the internet in the development of the websites. With the emergence of the digital age and other devices that can connect to the internet, web designers have come up with new ways of designing websites.  For example, with the use of search engines, developers can learn ways of enhancing the performance of websites.  Furthermore, they have to ensure that the web pages are of fixed sizes to enhance user experience. In ensuring that the user experience is enhanced, web designers have come up with the concept of “single web”. A single web is a concept that gives web designers the opportunity of embedding designs that are adaptive and receptive. With the two features, that is, the adaptive and receptive characteristics, it becomes possible for the website to restructure its layout and visual illustration.


As discussed throughout the paper, web development heralded the emergence of several technology solutions and other numerous incidents. Web development began from the 1990s and by 2000s, web developers had already incorporated numerous features purposed to enhance the user experience and increase the performance of the sites. Today, web developers have identified numerous tools for enhancing the performance of the websites. Among all the tools, the HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, and JavaScript have played a fundamental role in the development of websites. In essence, the design and development of web applications is no longer a daunting process as long as the prerequisite platforms are accessible. Currently, almost every aspect of life is dependent on the internet which plays a significant role in enhancing the performance of websites.
