Sample Paper on The Process of Setting up a Facebook Account

As information technology and ICT takes center stage in business and personal communications, social media sites have become the main media of perpetuating this. Major social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp, and LinkedIn. Initially, these sites were designed to be accessible mainly via computers, but as IT progressed and the assembly of high-speed data-enabled cell phones made possible, most of these sites have been simplified for access from cell phones. The processes of setting up most of these social media accounts are usually simple and analogous across the divide as only an internet connection and internet-enabled device are required. Facebook is the leading social media site and the process of creating a Facebook account is easy as well. This paper will give a step-by-step procedure one would follow in creating a Facebook account.

To create an account one should visit the Facebook homepage. On the right-hand side of the page, there is a “Sign Up! It’s free, and always will be” post. A signup form is available on the homepage in which the applicant is required to fill in the details of their first name, last name, e-mail address, password, gender, and birthday. As a confirmation, the applicant is required to re-enter their password, once all information is filled correctly, there is a green “Sign Up” button at the bottom which when clicked takes you to the next stage.

The second stage of the process requires the user to enter their mobile phone number to which a confirmation code will be sent from the site. It is important to note that the mobile phone number should be preceded by the country code of the applicant. Once the code is received, the applicant is required to enter it in a dialogue box given to continue with the SignUp process. At this juncture, a confirmation code is also sent to the applicant’s email address from which they are required to activate their account.

With the account activated, Facebook prompts you to search your email address for friends. This is optional and can be skipped. This subsequent step entails filling in profile information which is basically information such as High school attended, college, and the employer. This is also optional and one may be skipped. The next step of the SignUp process is selecting one’s news feeds where one may“like” their favorite pages in order to get the latest updates. This process is also optional and can be skipped. The last step requires one to upload a profile picture by either choosing an existing photo or taking a new one via a webcam. Once this is done, the account is completed.

Issues Encountered

  • One is not eligible to open a Facebook account unless they are above 13 years of age
  • It is not easy to find friends via e-mail address especially if the e-mail account is also new

Privacy Settings

In this account, I chose to use two privacy settings

  • Change future post audience; here I restricted viewing of my future posts to friends only. This is because I do not want strangers to follow up on my discussions.
  • Take advantage of convenience: in this setting, I chose to restrict viewing of other personal information except for name and profile photo to friends only. This is because malicious personnel online may use my personal information to cause fraud.

I envision using this account in the future to connect up with my early childhood friends, especially those from primary and high school with who am not in contact. I also plan to use this account to keep up with trending issues in news, sports, and entertainment by liking these pages.
