Sample Paper on Shakespeare: Soliloquy Discussion

Soliloquies are common literary tools whose usage extends beyond works of literature. Personally, I engaged in soliloquies frequently especially when I am alone. One particular soliloquy though stands out for me. While watching an educational television program, the presenter asked the audience to answer a question displayed on the screen to test their acumen in the topic being discussed. I got interested because I loved the topic. However, two of the multiple choices were tricky and closely related and the audience could only choose one answer. After making my prediction, it turned out that I was wrong when the answer was revealed at the end of the program. What followed was a prolonged soliloquy where I berated myself for failing. I even made a plan to research the topic again. Awkwardly, my mother was secretly watching and recording the whole scene on her cell phone.

The whole incident was rather inspiring and liberating. It provided an insight into my thought process and my motivation levels. It revealed a side of me that I rarely display to many people including my family: competitiveness. I was actually surprised that I could berate myself after I was shown the video. It was also comical and unsettling at the same time. Based on my personal experience and those of others, I believe soliloquies are realistic. Whether voluntarily or unconsciously, people frequently talk out loud to themselves while alone. Its usage in literary works is not imaged; it is a technique that audiences can identify with. Soliloquies provide comic relief and diffuse tension while also providing a platform for revealing a deeper insight into a particular matter or character.
