Studies conducted indicate that the best way to reduce environmental pollution is to avoid production of wastes. Manufacturing a new product needs a lot of material and energy. Raw materials must be extracted from their natural sources, and the product must be fabricated after which it is delivered to different markets (Abraham, Cherian, Elbi, Pothen & Thomas, 2011). Therefore, reduction and reuse of these new products are the most effective ways to protect the natural environment from pollution; save the natural resources and ensure higher economic performance. However, where the damage is already done, recycling is always the best means of solving environmental issue. This is because recycling is environmentally friendly and cost effective (Burrowes, Purviance, Quiner, & Stork, 1994). This study analyzes how used rubber shoes and slippers can be recycled in order to come up with playing toys for children. Recycling of these rubber shoes and flip flops to make small toys for child’s play is a great idea that people are currently working on around the world. Used flip-flops can always be found on the shores of oceans such as IndianOcean.Therefore, recycling these materials will help clean the beaches and design quality gifts in the form of toys for children.

How can flip-flops and used rubber shoes be recycled to become wonderful playing toys for children?

Any design, brand of used flip-flops, or rubber shoes can be recycled to come up with playing toys for children. In most cases, children and their parents collect these used products from the ocean shores at a fee, and in the process helping these families to earn a living. After the collection, the families forward the used materials to crafts men who clean them, cut them into smaller pieces and then mold them into their desired shapes. The small pieces are then stick together using glue to form the desired shapes, and developed into specific toys like small cars and animals.

What are the statistics that surround the recycling of used rubber shoes and flip-flops?

The recycling of used rubber shoes and flip flops is majorly done in countries within Africa.This is because in most cases, these materials are dumped at the shores of oceans without recognizing the fact that they can be recycled and turned into items that have economic values. Through the recycling process, families have earned their living from these items alongside helping to clean the environment (Pike, Shannon, Lawrimore, McGee, Taylor & Lamoreaux, 2003). It is estimated that so far in the marine beaches of African Countries, for example, 80 tones, which translates to approximately 170000 flip-flops and rubber shoes, are collected and recycled each day.For instance, the Julie Churchfoundation, which is responsible for waste recycling helps in job creation and currently provide employment opportunities for about 2000 artisans in and around the coastal cities. Additionally, rubber processing plants in major cities of Africa pay more than 40, 000 individuals who clean the old rubber boots, snickers and flip-flops. In relation to waste recycling, these individuals glue waste pieces together and in the process createamazing kid toys and souvenirs from recycled rubber. With increased number of tourists visiting the coastal cities of Africa, the trend is only likely to go higher.

What are the key issues in recycling flip flops and used rubber?

There are a lot of reasons why it is important to recycle waste materials as much as possible. One of the most important reasons is that the recycling process conserves raw materials; making new products out of used materials reduces the need to consume other resources for the same purpose (Pike, Shannon, Lawrimore, McGee, Taylor & Lamoreaux, 2003). Therefore, recycling helps protect raw materials and protect natural habitats for the future generation. Similarly, the recycling process of flip-flop and rubber is based on the understanding of the amount of pollution such wastes cause the oceans. From the above figures and the studies conduction, it is evident that the level of pollution caused by these waste materials in the shores of Indian Ocean were very adverse. Other than pollution, recycling of the wastes adds value to some of these items, and in the processincreasing durability and safety to the environment. Recyclingsignificantly reduces the level of harm that can be caused by the waste products by transforming them into environmentally friendly components.However, for the recycling process to be completed, individuals and businesses require a lot of capital toimplement (Pike, Shannon, Lawrimore, McGee, Taylor & Lamoreaux, 2003). The machines used in carving the molded rubber into their desired shapes might be very expensive to purchase, meaning that there should be proper planning. Even so, getting the right group of artisans with the relevant skills to mold rubber into different shapes and sizes in the form of toys is not an easy task and this can as well prove to be challenging. On the same note, competition in the market between this recycled products and freshly manufactured toys might to so stiff prompting the artisans to shift to a more profitable venture.

What are the possible plans or ideas that can be put in place?

In order to encounter the problems associated with recycling of rubber products to produce toys for children, the following ideas can be implemented:

  • The artisans should come together and group themselves in order to work as a team, thereby beating competition from other products such as imported toys.
  • The cost of production of the recycled toy products should be minimal as possible so as to ensure that the end products, toys, are affordable to the general public and potential buyers.
  • In cases where there are no enough capital to invest in the machinery, artisans can acquire loans from banks or other financial institutions.
  • Since these rubber materials are recycled to make toys, they should be thoroughly cleaned and any chemical substances neutralized. This is because ate very vulnerable and can easily get diseases.
  • Artisans to try and come up with toy models that are relevant to the current technological times in order to match corruption.
  • Artisans can try production in large scale so as to reduce the cost of production. Recycling the products in large scale reduces the cost of production compared to small scale production.
  • New packaging and technological products that are being produced contain compounds that are non-biodegradable. Manufacturing companies should therefore produce biodegradable compounds that are friendly to the environment.

There is a lot of creativity involved in this work, the process of molding and shaping the molded rubber into the requiredtoy shapes and sizes is very complicated and requiresadequate and relevant skills to implement.

Which of the following ideas can be implemented?

The ideas in the above section if implemented can improve on the quality and market value of the recycled products (McCarty & Shrum, 1994). However, not all the ideas can be implement with respect to the technological, spatial or monetary constraints involved in some of them. For instance, production in large scale is cost effective, but the artisans lack enough funds to purchase machinery that can be used to produce the required shapes at the same time. As a result, the shape the toys manually, this consumes a lot of time and in the long run lowering production (Pan, 2003). However, to counter this, the artisans can group themselves so as to practice specialization and in the process increasing the rate of production. Other issues that they can implement include; detoxifying the flip flops before molding to reduce their chemicals composition, hardening the rubber to increase durability and quality and having a central pool of capital where all forms of capitals are channeled for accountability and planning.

How can the above mentioned ideas be implemented?

From the starts, children collect these used products from the ocean shores, they afterwards forward the used materials they have collect to craftsmen who clean them, cut them into smaller pieces and then mold them into their desired shapes (Coran & Howard, 1999). The small pieces are then stick together using glue to form the desired shape. For example, small cars, ducks and round balls.

Objectives and recommendations

Even though recycling of flip-flops and used rubber to make toys for children is still viewed as small scale, it is really helping in protecting the environment.People should therefore advocate for recycling of used products as means of taking care of the environment (Egharevba, Okieimen, Okwu & Malomo, 2011). Relevant organizations should as well create awareness on the importance of recycling other than waste disposal. The following recommendations are important in achieving the desired goals;

  • Governments should create enabling environments that enables the artisans to work on their products. For example, they should provide security around the coastal cities to encourage tourism and in the process creating market for the artisans recycled products.
  • Relevant organization that deal with environmental problems should partner with the artisans, and provide them with adequate capital to purchase machines and other equipment.
  • Recycling of used product should be people’s priority, therefore, everyone should advocate for recycling of used products other than disposing them as trash.

In general, waste rubber and flip-flops recycling to make small toys is one of the greatest ideas that can be used not only as a way towards eliminating environmental pollution, but also towards ensuring job creation for individual households. The focus on newly manufactures play toys could be termed as lack of innovative ideas to convert the waste rubber materials that are readily available into useful items (Abraham, Cherian, Elbi, Pothen & Thomas, 2011). It is true that environmental intervention through recycling of waste materials will help clean the beaches alongside designing quality gifts in the form of toys for children.
