Sample Paper on Evidence-based management (EBM) on Decision Making  

Evidence-based management (EBM) entails utilizing actual data from research in decision making. Managers and leaders in authoritative positions can benefit from making evidence-based decisions. While this type of leaders is still considered new in organizations, its utilization has enabled more companies to manage their staff well and make decisions that are profitable to the organizations.

Some of the positive aspects of EBM include ensuring that leaders make decisions based on researched evidence. Utilizing real data through EBM also ensures that epidemiologists apply the concepts obtained from similar situations in their decision-making. EBM promotes success and productivity since the decisions made rely on proved techniques. EBM also relies on experimentation and tests conducted among similar populations, which ensures that its application in epidemiological situations is based on the results obtained from the research. The use of EBP also reduces the operation costs and costs of healthcare by ensuring the approaches used in patient management are based on proven facts (Bower, 2017).

Negative factors associated with utilization of EBM include the inability to apply techniques such as the use of intuition and personal experience. The evidence obtained from research might favor certain types of healthcare organizations or might have been conducted at a time when factors such as financial status of the country, number of staff working within the organization, or disease demographics were different. As such, applying the evidence obtained from the research in a different setting or time could have different results or lead to the company’s failure. Other limitations associated with EBM include the possibility of accessing misleading results from research, which might occur due to reporting bias and poor representation of research participants (Sheridan & Julian, 2016). The negative aspects related to EBM could interfere with the expected outcomes in organizations and lead to unforeseen failure.

While EBM is an effective decision-making approach, managers and individuals in supervisory roles should incorporate their logical perspectives and intuitions in decision-making. They should also rely on data from their organizations and in-depth research to ensure that they utilize peer-reviewed studies, which contain high-quality evidence. The reliability of the evidence used should also be based on its sources since evidence obtained from recognized journals are less likely to be biased.
