Nurses, like other professionals, have to contend with the intricate balancing act between professional and personal life. The two interact in a reciprocating manner. The personal values, beliefs, worldviews, experiences, and interactions with the environment all play a critical in shaping our professional lives. These value system, beliefs, and experiences are the building blocks necessary for building a holistic being. As a nurse, having a philosophy or defined set of values and beliefs that guide your practice is a fundamental success factor both as a professional and individual. A well-defined value system is particularly crucial in driving a nurse’s individual growth, career progression, and improved patient outcomes due to better service delivery, especially at organizational level. A nursing philosophy is a product of inflective process that utilizes an individual’s interactions and experiences to come up with a well-defined value system. Such a value system shapes our attitudes, the growth of our knowledge and skillset, and beliefs. As a nurse, my practice is centered on providing compassionate, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to all individuals.

My nursing philosophy is influenced by personal, classroom, and professional experiences and interactions. The need for evidence-based practice in nursing care and through the health sector is aimed at improving patient outcomes, quality of care, and patient safety as well as reducing cost of healthcare services. The concept formed a significant part of my nursing education program. The nursing education curricula is informed by well-documented benefits of relying on scientific evidence in nursing practice. Moreover, I have experienced firsthand the crucial role evidence-based practices play in my profession and in the health care sector in general. From communication to nursing care programs, technologies, and diagnostic tools and procedures, science plays a fundamental role in my profession. Our transcultural communication practices and transdiagnostic treatment and nursing programs are designed based on scientific evidence. As a nurse, I believe that evidence-based practice is a key component of any healthcare delivery system. Therefore, I not only implement these practices in my profession, I also actively engage in nursing research to contribute towards entrenching the concept in nursing and other professions.

Nurses today operate in a culturally diverse setting characterized by colleagues and patients from different cultural, social, and religious backgrounds. Therefore, cultural competence and intelligence are important skills in today’s nursing practice. In the United States, like many other countries, cultural diversity is more pronounced due migration and cultural exchanges that define modern day globalized communities. As a nurse, I believe provision of high-quality nursing care to all patients is pegged on embracing cultural diversity. Without transcultural communication skills, forming rapport with patients and collaborating with colleagues within a healthcare facility or system can be an arduous task. Effective workplace communication and interaction with workmates and patients is one of the primary determinants of patient outcomes. Patient-nurse interactions become more effective when founded on trust born out good rapport (Kathryn, 2011). Studies have shown that patients are more responsive to treatments that are aligned to their transdiagnostic characteristics such as sexual orientation, religious affiliations, age, and culture among others (Norcross & Wampold, 2018). As a nurse, I believe that nursing practice must be tailored to suit these transdiagnostic characteristics to achieve better patient outcomes. My belief is not only founded on the research findings but also on personal experiences. I have witnessed cases of conflicts in workplaces and social settings arising because of cultural differences.

In recognition of the changing environment of nursing practice especially with regards to scientific and technological advancements and diversity, my attitude towards career development has transformed over the years. I believe technology is increasingly becoming the centerpiece of nursing practice. Technology not only aid nursing care, it also facilitate nursing research. Therefore, to becoming a better nurse, it imperative to understand vital technologies such as electronic health records, telemedicine and modern equipment and devices for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring patient conditions. These devices and equipment facilitate the delivery of individualized nursing care. While I have taken extra classes to understand how these technologies can be applied in my profession, I also intend to take short courses on new and emerging technologies. My consciousness when it comes to protecting patient dignity and privacy in the face of these technological advancements has also important. Nurses, like all healthcare practitioners should take an active role in safeguarding patient privacy.

In conclusion, my nursing philosophy is shaped by my experiences and interactions. As a nurse, I am driven by compassion to provide high-quality nursing care that is based on scientific evidence. Compassion fuels the need to embrace technology, evidence-based practices, and cultural diversity. Providing individualized care based on a patient’s transdiagnostic characteristics and healthcare needs requires compassion. Without compassion, it would difficult for nurses to engage in nursing research or career development initiatives. Evidence-based practices is an important foundational pillar of nursing practice. Our understanding of transcultural communication, cultural diversity, and technological advancements in nursing practice stem scientific evidence. Therefore, I will endeavor to align my attitudes, values, and beliefs to personal experiences and scientific evidence.
