The book emphasizes the topics covered in class about business management and human resources management. The book is important since it covers several aspects of business management and equips the reader with the tools needed to make an impact in the business world.

The introductory part of the book deals with defining the terms management and business. The definition of the terms is essential for it helps a reader understand the major concept of the book. Management is defined as the art of guiding human resources so that organizations can achieve their goals. On the other hand, business is an activity carried out by humans to acquire economic stability and wealth. Therefore, the authors define business management are the processes of guiding human labor in a business to achieve success.

One of the areas that has been covered in this book in class is the functions of management within an organization. The authors indicate that for a business to thrive, there must be a working system that ensures that the goals and objectives of the company are met. Corporations should have different managers who cover distinct sections. One of the managerial positions that should be present in organizations is its overall head. Such a leader is responsible for managing other managers and steering the organization to the right direction. Besides, firms should have managers who head the human resources department, who are tasked with the responsibility of hiring individuals who can help the enterprise to achieve growth. Moreover, the managers are in charge of finding trainers to help employees acquire the skills needed for them to excel in their roles. The managers working in human resources department are required to ensure that employee relations are maintained. Therefore, managerial positions in organizations are important for they help the corporations to realize their vision.

The authors cover the qualities that managers should possess. The same topic has been covered in class lectures, and the topic aims at equipping individuals who are looking to seek managerial positions know the skills that they need to possess. Many of the organizations still rely on human labor despite the technological advancements that have been realized over the years. Therefore, managers should possess skills that enable them to maintain working relationships with every individual in an organization. One of the qualities of a manager covered in the book is confidence, which allows individuals working in managerial positions to not only issue orders but also ensure that they are followed. Nevertheless, confidence alone cannot enable managers to steer their employees in the right direction. These leaders also need to be patient when dealing with their employees. Managers should understand that many times employees will need their guidance as they carry out their duties. Instead of being heavy handed when employees fail to meet their expectations, managers should help their employees enroll into training programs that can equip them with the needed skills.

The authors mention that there are several approaches to management. They identify four approaches to management, including operations research, contingency, classical, and systems approaches. The operations method of management deals with human resources and emphasizes on developing human relations within an organization. The managers should be able to develop close and working relationship with their employees for the organization to succeed. On the other hand, quantitative approach relies on employing statistics to identify and solve problems that might impede the progress of a firm. Managers examine numbers and quantify them to make decisions that could help the organization be sustainable. However, there is a limitation to quantitative approach; the electronic and operations research cannot be relied upon to make the final management decision. The classical approach explains the principles of management. Henry Fayol, who is described as the father of modern management theory, notes that some of the general principles of management include authority, division of labor, unity of direction, discipline and unity of command. The principles are essential for any managers since they enable the managers to help their employees to gather the knowledge that they may need not only to benefit themselves but also the organization.

Apart from the daily activities that they are supposed to conduct, employees should be given additional tasks that can prepare them for the positions that they may hold in future. Managers can encourage their workforce to work closely with other employees. Team work, as indicated by the authors, is necessary since it helps organizations achieve their objectives quickly. When employees are engaged in team building activities, they lean about and from one another. The individuals who are succeeding in their areas should have the opportunity to share with their fellow employees about how they are able to achieve success. Therefore, managers should push their employees to step out of their comfort zones.

While managers aim to maximize profits and gain wealth, they also have a responsibility towards the community. The book argues that social responsibility also helps organizations succeed. One of the impacts of social responsibility is that it earns organizations loyalty from their consumers.
