The narrator in the story explains of how she was in love with another girl who was called Charlotte Greaves. The narrator in the story is a Lesbian. Charlotte was in a relationship with a man called Maurice who had a French accent. Additionally, the girl also had another secret relationship with another guy whose name is not disclosed. The narrator problems with herself, other people and the whole society. The only place that she feels that she will feel satisfied is having an affair with Charlotte. Maurice, was creating a barrier for the narrator to reach the girl but to her advantage, the man got a TV newscaster job in Thailand and hence had there was room for the two meeting.

The narrator and Charlotte had been building a relationship but unfortunately Maurice comes back. He had arrived to pick the girl for marriage as he had promised when he left. The two met at the dining hall and Maurice asked Charlotte whether she had been sleeping with the narrator and she agreed. Therefore, the man went to the narrator to explain that he was there to marry the girl. The narrator agrees to leave the girl and allow her to get married. However, after the two had agreed on the issue, they found another guy enjoying the curls of the bangs in Charlotte’s room. It is later realized that they had been having sex with the guy. Nevertheless, Maurice, opt the marry Charlotte but first she shaved her hair to bald. They went Thailand and he received criticism from friend including a workmate, Aneepa Kapoor, whom they were having a light relationship.

The narrator of the story seems to use different voices at different times.  At the end of the story, the voice is felt to a disappointed one and painful. The girl she had been hoping that they will make a relationship is taken by the man who had promised to marry her. The pain in the voice can be demonstrated where the narrator realizes that the girl she had been thinking was solely in her relationship had been having sex with another man the time she was not with her. Additionally, a voice of hope is demonstrated by the narrator when the boyfriend got a job in Thailand. She got a way to be able to reach the girl with the bangs.

The themes of perception and representation have also been greatly demonstrated in the story. The narrator had a perception that Charlotte has settled with her for lifetime. However, when Maurice comes back, he takes Charlotte to go and marry her. Additionally, the understanding of the narrator was that the girl was only in a relationship with but later found out that there was a man whom she was having sex with for all that time. Moreover, Aneepa Kapoor had a belief that may be Maurice could marry her since he had started a light relationship. The theme of representation has been demonstrated in the story by the bangs. The bangs are seen as the cause of people being attracted to Charlotte. She was unfaithful; she never waited for her man to come back, instead she got a relationship with the narrator and the unnamed man. Maurice believed that the bangs were the problem. Thus, he made her to shave all the hair so that he could feel safe after marriage.
