Weather Forecasting

Abstract

Recent studies have hinted to the inability of traditional techniques of weather forecasting to provide accurate weather information. This has prompted weather forecasters to design tools, equipment and technologies to aid the process of predicting elements of weather and their occurrences. Weather satellite technology is one of the new techniques that have positively impacted on weather forecasting. Likewise, weather radar equipment have also been useful in forecasting because they potentially help in examining precipitation, estimate the motion of rain and determine the time of rain. In the future, there is need to develop a new generation of satellite technology devices that can provide higher spatial and temporal resolution images. Consequently, in future, radar technology will greatly be used in the context of an integrated observing system.

Introduction

Everybody relates to weather predictions when people are told that it is going to rain then what they witness is magnificent sunshine. For that matter, people agree that weather forecasting has always not been very accurate. This has prompted weather forecasters to design tools, equipment and technologies to aid the process of predicting elements of weather and their occurrences. This means that a quiet revolution is currently taking place; this is aimed at improving forecasting now and in the future. It is worth pointing out that the use of weather radar equipment and satellite technology could greatly improve extreme forecasting of weather to much detailed examination going beyond months. Further, new equipment and technology could also save lives tremendously. Use of new technologies has been necessitated by the assertion that weather forecasting may be accurate within a week before diminishing even further as many days goes by (Lubchenco & Hayes n.p). This paper examines the future of weather forecasting while exploring the roles played by weather radar equipment and satellite technology now and in the future in respect to weather predictions.

Weather Radar Equipment and Satellite Technology

Weather forecasting is an activity of predicting the future weather patterns of a given place in time. History reveals that various techniques have been used to predict changes in weather patterns and have mostly been reliance on observation of daily changes in elements such as clouds, sunlight and animal behaviors (Lubchenco & Hayes n.p). These techniques have not always been precise when there is need for accurate weather predictions in areas such as military defense, manufacturing and agricultural activities.

Different techniques have been used to predict weather patterns but most of them have not been so accurate. Weather satellite technology is one of the new techniques that have positively impacted on weather forecasting. This is a technology that uses a satellite to significantly monitor weather and climate of given localities on earth. As it is known, satellites are positioned to orbit around the earth and records beyond cloud patterns because they can asynchronously determine effects of forest fires, pollution, snow cover, sea currents among others (Lubchenco & Hayes n.p). This technology has been helpful because it can be affirmed that satellites captured images and assisted in monitoring the volcanic activities and ash cloud emanating from Mount St. Helens. Currently, satellite images capture by this technology has greatly detected effects on vegetation, ocean bodies and ice fields (Zidle n.p). As a matter of fact, effects of El Nino have always been monitored on a day to day basis through use of images from this technology. Studies reveal that visible images provided by weather satellites are always easy to interpret even by a layman because activities of clouds, dust and smog are readily ostensible (Zidle n.p).  For instance, weather forecasters can potentially determine and predict wind activity by simply determining patterns shown by clouds and can apparently can be observed from satellite images.

Infrared images from satellite technology allows analysts to estimate the height of clouds, examine water body temperatures and in the process provide valuable information that weathermen can use to predict the likely occurrence of weather elements. A lot of information can be gleaned from satellite images to aid weather monitoring. For example, analysts assert that snowfield monitoring through weather satellite technology has been critical in keeping track of runoffs (Zidle n.p). Further, effects of pollution on the atmosphere can also be ascertained because they potentially affect weather patterns of places. It is worth mentioning that atmospheric pressure and moistures information have been currently captured by satellite technology, this has been helpful in adding certain degree of precision and accuracy in prediction of weather.

On the other hand, weather radar equipment has also been useful in forecasting because it potentially helps in examining precipitation, estimate the motion of rain and determine the time of rain. The equipment has been critical in predicting the motion of rain and ultimately the intensity of precipitation. Moreover, information delivered by radar equipment can be used to analyze and explore the composition of storms thereby delivering data on the causes of severe weather. This technique was used in the last century during World War II to provide echoes on screen to unmask potential energy targets. It was developed to comprehensively determine the intensity of precipitation. Today it is extensively used in weather forecasting stations, educational institutions and television newscasts. Notably, radar equipment is used in assistance with specific software to predict both short and long term intensities of rain, snow and weather characteristics. Further, it can be used to improve weather analyses and forecasts when it is integrated into weather forecasting models. It works by spreading radar beam as it moves away from a forecasting station then directly sends microwave radiation signals to an antenna. The wavelength it generates effectively determines the size of raindrop that bounces off in the direction of radar stations.

Analysis of Current and Future

Currently, weather satellite technologies are used to manage the process of data distribution in the form of images on a daily basis. For that matter, satellite data is comprehensively used to forecast weather patterns for the public, media and in weather advisory services. In light of this, information provided can be analyzed and used in federal agencies, agriculture and defense. However, in future, there is need to develop a new generation of satellite technology device that can provide higher spatial and temporal resolution images. Therefore, this new technology will potentially provide an improvement in prediction of atmospheric temperatures and moisture surrounding different weather situations. Further, the new model will provide an avenue for continuous monitoring and analysis of intense weather data. Precise images from new model satellite technologies will be able to estimate the size of rainfall and intensity of thunderstorms and hurricanes thereby allowing weathermen to provide advisory data to the public.

Weather radar technologies have currently been used to detect, describe, track and forecast short and long term precipitation. It has been established that the technology has been useful in preservation of life because it provides data used by forecasters to warn the public of imminent severe weather patterns to ensure public safety while proving useful in the aviation industry (Riken n.p). In future, the technology should integrate a broad array of sensors to ensure the continuation of current capabilities, address inadequacies witnessed, and take advantage of new knowledge in weather forecasting. For that case, in future, radar technology will greatly be used in the context of an integrated observing system. There will be a blend between radar and satellite technology to produce effective weather predictions compared to what is seen today. Additionally, radar will increasingly be used to generate data to be used in advanced simulation schemes, hydrological forecast model and numerical weather patterns.

Conclusion

In the past, weather forecasters used traditional techniques like observation to predict weather patterns. To a large extent, this has not been accurate as pointed above. Therefore, the industry has engaged use of weather satellite and radar technology to comprehensively predict short and long term weather patterns with great precision. Information provided by these new technologies have been useful in providing advisory service to the public, government agencies and the aviation industry. However, a lot needs to be done through improvement of these technologies to include new models, knowledge and demands to necessitate provision of conclusive data in respect to changing weather patterns.
