Introduction

The establishment of the ferry and water taxi in Abu Dhabi relates to the desire for the country to enhance the development of the urban public transportation. Since, the improved transportation would contribute to the overall economic growth of the county through urban expansion and industrial development.  The paper will seek to make the relevant comparison between the Australasia ferry and water taxi for its integration in Abu Dhabi transportation system. The comparison of ferry and water taxi is consistent with the vision for Abu Dhabi to develop a word-class transport network that supports its 2030 plans. It will address the regional transport needs in the entire region meeting the specific strategic needs and development (Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, 2010).  Therefore, the establishment of effective facilities of ferry and water taxis is relevant in improving the transportation networks in Abu Dhabi.

The integration of the water taxis will be a relevant innovation in the transport networks in Abu Dhabi. The transport department seeks to create a successful development of the current transport systems in the cut along other primary roads, open spaces and waterfront in the public places. The water taxis will form the relevant functional and efficient measures that can measure the total amount of people or trips in the new transport development. Based on the plans of the Department of Transport, the launch of the water taxis and ferry will provide an expansion of the current transportation infrastructure.  The department also performed relevant assessments on the modern water transport systems including the water taxis and ferry. It was noted that the two modes of water transport are effective in the development of transport in Abu Dhabi.

A study by the Department of transport estimates that the number of ferry user will increase to 58,000, by 2030 while accommodating an additional 7,000 tourists among the 31,000 tourists expected in the region in a day.  Therefore, the water taxis and ferry are long-term options to enhance connectivity and improve the overall transport system in Abu Dhabi. It relates to the varying the scale and size of unit of each process and the demand spectrum. Thus, the accessibility of the water taxis systems top the number of the smaller units to improve the scale of development in the city. The design of the water taxis will be a mandatory development unlike other small-scale practices in the transportation system.

First, the establishment of the ferry will seek to transport a substantial amount of passengers in order to integrate with other transport network including roads and rails. The implementation of ferry is more complex than the water taxis. The ferry requires a large number of personnel who handles the different aspects in the ferry. While the water taxis requires the driver who transports the passengers to their desired destinations. In most occasions, the water taxis are used for recreational purposes unlike the ferry, which has fixed schedules on the destinations. In order to expand the opportunities for the transportation, the water taxis and the ferry allows for more capacity.

Mostly, the water taxis provides existing tours to the visitors as they can move irregularly along the waters. On the other hand, the ferry helps to move residents to their workplaces.  The transport processes enhances connectivity among the different regions in Abu Dhabi region. In transport systems, the safety of the passengers is very important.  In order to observe the safety of the ferry, the ferry should not sail above the heights of 2 meters. Thus, the captain should cancel or delay the sails based on the observation of any adverse weather conditions. Based on the regulation of the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi, the passengers of the ferry are required to focus on all rules and regulations during transportation.  The violation of the general terms of transportation would lead refusal of passengers, fine or prosecution in terms of the laws that have been outlined in the country.  The duty of the ferry is to provide the relevant transportation of passengers and vehicles. This is outlined in the provision of federal law No. (26) of 1981.   The Abu Dhabi transportation seeks to develop the relevant transport systems across the globe. Unlike the water taxis which are allowed to carry freights, the ferry only carries freights which must be allowed based on the requirements. However, there are certain freights that are not permissible. The non-permissible freights include any merchandise, non-belongings of the passengers, jet skis and boats, vehicles over 2 tons, and animals unless caged or securely locked.  Thus, the establishment of the ferry is relevant to the development of the transport system in an effective manner. Some of the freights allowed to the passengers include handbags, personal luggage in suitcases and loading of luggage in vehicles in the ferry. The water taxis do not have enough capacity to ferry the cars and heavy luggage as in the case of the ferry. Thus, the ferry is appropriate in the carrying of heavy luggage in Abu Dhabi. Therefore, the integration of the ferry in Abu Dhabi transport system would make it the appropriate for the economic and social development of the region.

Statistics Analysis of the Passengers

The ferry services that operate between the various cities vary in many aspects. Thus, the ferry services increases accessibility and connectivity of the residents and visitors in the different regions considering the increased transportation demands in the islands.   Similarly, the water taxi systems regulated by the Transport Department play a significant role in enhancing mobility of the Abu Dhabi residents. It is estimated that in 2012 there were 63,334,503 taxi passengers with an increase of 6.8 per cent from 2011.  The taxis are an important part of the Abu Dhabi transport system and the transport department continues to work to increase their availability. Thus, in 2012, the water taxis were increased to 7,147.  The water taxis have provided an alternative to the usage of the private vehicles.  As a result, the water taxis are essential in decreasing congestion through reduced parking needs and offering share urban and intercity movements.

Based on the statistics of Taxi systems in Abu Dhabi in Tables 1 and 2, there has been a remarkable growth in the transport sector. For example, in 2009, there were no female-only taxis, but in 2012, the number of the female-only taxis was 72.  This indicates the growth in the water taxis in order to relief the city from congestion. Therefore, the development and further exploitation of the ferries and water taxis would lead to positive effects to the economy.

Comparison with Water Taxis and Ferry in Australia

In comparison with the Australian Ferry and water taxis, the number of water taxis and ferry is less.  Australia is widely known for its developed water transport systems that include the water taxis and the ferry.  Unlike Australia, the water transport systems in Abu Dhabi are being developed by surface master plan. The plan provides that by 2030, the water taxis and ferries in Abu Dhabi will be developed.  The water taxis in Australia were established in 1975 in order to cater for tourism transportation. The water taxis in Australia waters rides across the different destinations in the Dunk Island.  This offers a comprehensive approach to the water transport systems in Australia. In contrast, the water taxis in Abu Dhabi were introduced in early 2000s to ease congestion on the roads networks.  Based on the comparison, the water taxis and ferry in Australia are more developed than in Abu Dhabi regions.

Development of Ferry and Water Taxis

The development of the ferry and water taxis is consistent with plan of the region to minimize congestion in the city. Addressing congestion would increase efficiency and safety of the people providing a positive impact in the sustainability of the city. The proposed implementation of the transportation system to allows more capacity to accommodate 823,000 daily commuters and eliminate the 400,000 daily road trips. The propositions would reduce travel time costs by 3.8 AED billion and save 102 million hours travel time per year.  It would also minimize the number of accidents from 23,000 and overall savings of 414AED million annually. In addition, the implementation of the ferry and the water taxis is relevant in reduction of the environmental hazards in Abu Dhabi. Both  the ferry and the taxis are aligned with the relevant environmental solutions that relate to efficiency and saving in the transporting systems Since, the two transport models uses the clean technologies   that would offer al  long term success in Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, 2010). The integration of the efficient transport system is crucial in the implementation of the best practices in the country including the ferry and the water taxis.   Based on the international standards for environmental conservancy, the transport modes are reliable in protecting the environment.

Over the years, Abu Dhabi has been positioned as a better center for development and infrastructure investment.  Considering its growth potential, the urban population has increased to more than 3 million and its diversity is perfect.   It implies that Abu Dhabi has grown into an international destination.   Based on the qualities and capabilities of water ferry and taxis, they assist in facilitating mobility and interactions of the visitors and residents.  The ferry and water taxis are reliable to the development of an effective transport system in Abu Dhabi under the Surface Transport Master Plan.  Ferry and Water Taxi services acts as a supplement to the land based transport system in Abu Dhabi and the nearby islands to perform offshore business and leisure.  The services are usually water borne and thus, they are integrated into the land based transport system.  The ferries and water taxis will lead to high quality and comfortable ways of travelling that accounts for the weather conditions.  They will also act as relevant public transport to promote the multi-model information (Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, 2010).

Conclusion

 In summary, the comparison of the ferry and water taxis provides a comprehensive overview for an integrated transport system. Based on the fact of ferries, it follows pre-planned routes with already published schedules. While the water taxis are only licensed to operate in the water, both the ferry and water taxi services will enhance flexibility for both the residents and passengers.  The integration of the two services will promote transportation to all people irrespective of their family sizes and income levels. The ferries are able to offer transportation unlike the water taxis, which are for special business, leisure and tourism.  From this transportation perspective, the public transport systems are relevant in enhancing more accessible and attractive forms of transportation to the residents and visitors.  Thus, the design of the ferries and water services is to meet the transport need to the various people in Abu Dhabi and the neighboring vicinities.  Most importantly, the integration of the ferries and water taxis will make the public transport the best alternative.  Since, the integrated transport systems will offer comfort and easy transport of the passengers from one mode of transport to another.   The ferries are relevant and reliable, as they provide users with real time connections to their destinations.  Therefore, ferry and water taxis are appropriate in improving transportation in Abu Dhabi.
