My Leadership Philosophy

Every leader has a philosophy that they follow to lead others. It is because their leadership philosophy defines their unique style of management of the organization. At the same time, it lays out the principles and the guidelines that a leader follows to operate an organization or a department successfully. At the same time, a leader will use their philosophy to establish a culture for the company. Many leaders develop their philosophies after a period of leadership, meaning that their experiences become a stepping stone towards defining their style of leadership. However, even though the theories are personal, they are also professional. It is because they convey a leader’s communication style, their work priorities in the organization, and expectations (ADRP 6-22 Army Leadership, 2012). It also defines their morals and values within the organization. My leadership philosophy is to be transformational, and I have managed to achieve this by leading by example, leading from the front, and motivating employees by rewarding them.

The success of an organization becomes as clear as the philosophy of its leader. It is because the leadership philosophy becomes a professional compass that is not only followed by the leader but also by the entire team of the employees (ADRP 1 The Army Profession, 2013). As a leader, I believe that the best way to become accountable is by leading by example. I have managed to use this philosophy to improve the morale of the employees towards their practice. It is because my employees look to me for strength and guidance, which is an aspect of becoming a great leader (AMSC, n.d). As a result of this, I have to lead them with my actions by walking the walking. The strategy of leading by example has also inspired the majority of my employees to push themselves to become better in their level of performance.

The other leadership philosophy that I possess is leading from the front for the primary purpose of getting things done. I believe that it is my role as a leader to handle the things that seem challenging to the employees. It is a way to show them that they can accomplish anything. In most cases, leaders tend to leave all duties to their followers. The focus is to see to it that the work is done even though themselves they cannot handle such responsibilities. An attitude of leading from the front means a great deal for my employees because it shows them that I am realistic, especially with the organizational expectations. I believe that despite the fact that delegation of duty is part of the leader’s work, they should also be involved in ensuring that tasks are completed successfully instead of sitting comfortably on the sideline.

My other leadership philosophy is that the employees need to follow me together with those who are under me. However, for a leader to get others to follow them, they have to become aware of their needs. The best way to know this is by asking them or involving them. Most followers want trust, hope, and a high level of work stability for them to effectively follow their leader (Paul & Linda, 2016). As a result, they do not have to struggle to follow their leader. At the same time, followers want their leader to show them genuine compassion. The best way I have managed to achieve this is by influencing their lives in different ways. For instance, part of the strategies that I have managed to use to improve influence successfully is through relationship management. Rather than being too rigid as a leader, I have created an environment where my employees can easily reach out to me. It is through this that I have managed to learn more about their needs successfully.

As a leader, my other philosophy is rewarding my followers as a way to motivate them and also to show them loyalty. Most followers feel motivated when their efforts towards the organization are recognized (Robbins & Timothy, 2012). I have achieved this by giving presents to the followers as a reward for their efforts towards achieving organizational goals. However, I do not punish individuals who do not follow me or work under me. It is because they may be better in other areas, thus which may not be concerning me or my duties. At the same time, my other leadership philosophy is to keep things within the organization simple by establishing a culture of collaboration through teamwork. Creating a strong team is one way to achieve a high level of performance in an organization (AMSC, n.d). Through proper coordination and collaboration, I have managed to establish strong teams in the organization that I serve as a leader. At the same time, I am the type of leader who fights for its followers, especially when the organization does not meet their needs and wants. For instance, in cases where they lack appropriate resources, I involve the board members to look for funds to purchase the needed supplies to make the employees effective. Majority of my followers recognize my determination and resilience, which pushes then to putting extra effort.

In conclusion, my leadership philosophy is similar to that of a transformational leader. It is because I lead by example while in other cases from the front, motivate the followers, reward loyalty, keep things simple in the organization, and fight for my followers. My leadership philosophies have enabled me to meet the needs of my followers in various ways.
