Multicultural education draws its roots from the civil rights movements of 1960 through to 1970. It was mainly motivated by the African Americans struggle towards realization of equality in admission to and access to education in universities, colleges and schools.

Webster dictionary defines culture as beliefs, customs artifacts, features, and socio-religious practices characteristic of a specific populace within an area.

Culture includes the way of life of s people including all practices, beliefs, symbols, values and symbols characteristic of their existence and is passed on orally from one generation to the next (Banks, 1997).

Culture could also be defined by deliberate classification of individuals based on a perceived socio-economic or political affiliation such that they are readily distinguishable from other members of society (Nieto, 1992).

8) Explain the 4 basic conditions to lesson negative prejudices and to encourage healthy behavioral habits in schools.

Develop positive relations or cross-group friendships in their personal interactions

Instill awareness on possible cultural biases that could arise during normal day-to-day interactions.

Encouraging learners and staff to practice mindfulness and sensitivity towards others that seem different.

Encouraging empathic communication among the learners constituting the populace.

9) Explain 3 conditions for a multicultural school.

The mainstream curriculum is often a reflection of the constituent population’s culture, ethnic constitution as well as gender and practice.
