Economics 3315 Due: Wednesday, Oct 12
Term Paper Step 1
Worth 5/100 points in calculation of final grade
Will be marked out of 10
This is the first step of your term paper.
Repeat assignment 1 choosing your own topic from the list below. For each topic, compare the
suggested outcome for two provinces and/or territories. For most of the topics listed below,
you can (and should) further compare outcomes for men and women; in most cases you can also
choose the age group you would prefer to study. Use annual data.
(It is possible to choose a topic not on this list as long as you check with me first.)
NOTE: You can’t choose unemployment rates since you have already completed an assignment
on this topic.
Broad topic areas:
1. Changes over time in median hourly wage rates;
2. Changes over time in the proportion of married men with a young child (i.e., aged 0 to 5)
participating in the labour force compared to married women with a young child
participating in the labour force;
3. Changes over time in the proportion of single women with no children participating in the
labour force compared to lone mothers with a young child (i.e., 0 to 5) participating in the
labour force;
4. Changes over time in the distribution of earnings;
5. Changes over time in the proportion of seniors (e.g., 55 to 64; 65 to 74) engaged in paid
work
Note: To discuss ‘changes over time,’ you should have 10 to 15 years of data.
Note: Don’t choose a province/territory, age group and/or topic in which the data quality is less
than ‘good.’
Note: If your labour market outcome is denominated in current dollars, you will need to convert
to real terms using CPI.
Using Statistics Canada data, provide a chart (or charts) that give a first look at the data relevant
for your topic. As in Assignment 1, analyse key patterns. Think about theories/discussions from
the textbook, lectures and and/or reading list that are relevant for the labour market outcome you
are considering. Are there differences across the regions or between the age/gender groups you
are comparing that might help us to understand the patterns you observe?
Refer again to assignment one for instructions about making a chart and structuring your
writing.

Again – remember that academic integrity must be respected.
If you use an idea from another source, even if you re-write in your own words, you must include
a parenthetic reference (e.g., Phipps, 2020). If you use the actual words from another source,
even if you change them a little bit, you must indent and single space these words, and cite the
author, date and page number from which you have taken the words. All sources of information,
including data or table or charts taken from another source must also be acknowledged in a
bibliography at the end of your work.
