Forgiveness is an essential component of communication. It entails the intentional process through which an individual who has been wronged undergoes a change of emotions regarding the offense committed. Religions around the world encourage their faithful to forgive to maintain a harmonious living. In schools, communication lessons are usually accompanied by lessons on forgiveness, such as its importance in promoting effective interpersonal relationships between people. Forgiveness relinquishes one from the need to hold resentment and hurtful feelings, which might affect how one interacts with others or contribute to depressive feelings.
Through the relationships that I have been writing about during this semester, some of the lessons that I have learned about forgiving others include the essence of using forgiveness as a way of freeing myself of upsetting feelings and making a fresh start. The class has also taught me that it is critical to make a decision on whether to let the person who had wronged one to continue being part of one’s life or moving on without them. In cases, whereby the other party is unwilling to accept his or her mistake and ask for forgiveness, letting them go might be a more effective solution as compared to keeping them in one’s life.
The lessons that I have learned about forgiving have been essential in demonstrating how to improve relationships with people in the future. The lessons’ insight about the importance of living a resentment-free life appealed to me and I plan to apply it in my life. Indeed, letting go of toxic relationships and people who do not acknowledge their mistakes is important. I realized that not every relationship with friends or significant others will be successful and in some cases letting go of the hurt and the people contributing to those feelings might be the right thing to do. With this in mind, I will carefully assess the relationships that I will form with other people in the future to determine which ones are valuable and those that are not.
Undoubtedly, this class has enabled me to understand that accepting forgiveness from others is as essential as asking for clemency from them. Accepting forgiveness shows people that one is ready to forget about the mistakes that had been committed and not dwell in the past but move forward by promoting a healthy relationship with the person. It is not common for one to believe that he or she does not deserve forgiveness, especially when one believes that the mistakes are too grave to be pardoned. While in some case, one might be unable to forgive others immediately, holding these feelings hurts the victim and might affect other people such as family members. This might jeopardize the structure of the family and result to cases of separation, poor performance among children in school, and might affect the behavior of younger children in the family. Considering the effects that holding on to resentment might have on the larger society, I plan to accept forgiveness from those around me in the future as a way of promoting healthy relationships. I have also learned that receiving forgiveness entails not constantly reminding the person of the mistake that they did or telling other people of how they wronged you as this shows that that one did not let go of the wrongs committed by the victim.
I have learned the importance of understanding that other people are also vulnerable and can be hurt due to my actions. Although my actions might not seem hurtful to me, I have learned the importance of viewing my actions from the victim’s perspectives. This has enabled me to understand that at times I might wrong others without necessarily intending to hurt them. It has also made it possible for me to apologize for my mistakes. Through these lessons, I now understand that forgiving others puts me in control of determining how the relationship will be moving forward and setting effective boundaries and expectations that will govern the relationship. Through this, I plan to be more patient and forgiving with people.
I expect to form better friendships that are based on truthfulness and honesty in future. I also expect to have healthier relationships with people and an improved emotional health. These lessons have taught me the effects that holding a grudge by not forgiving others or how not accepting forgiveness from others can affect my personal health and relationships. To ensure that I get rid of resentment in my future relationships, I plan to be more considerate and offer people my forgiveness when they ask genuinely. This will help me in maintaining the friendships that I value and show the people around me that I value their relationships. I have learned that forgiveness goes beyond stating the words, “I forgive you.” It encompasses the transformation of negative emotions to positive ones, and in some cases ruling out a punishment that was meant for the offender. While forgiveness entails apologizing even when it is not my fault, it is important to ensure that the other person knows that they have been forgiven.
