Introduction

Criminal laws in Canada have consistently changed in a single direction in the past
years. This changes have involved imposing penalties that are stiffer and creating additional
offences so as to enhance safety among the Canadian communities. Major significant changes
in Canadian criminal law include increase in mandatory minimum sentences.
Forced minimum sentences
One of the most notable recent changes in the Canadian criminal laws is the increased
mandatory minimum sentences. Most of children sexual offences due to the changes have
mandatory minimums. In the previous years, sentencing the crimes of most criminal offences
was mainly left to the courts to make their own judgemets. Hovever, this laws have been
changed by the recent government in that all such offences will be punishable by an
imprisonment of 90 days or an equivalent of one year for matters that are more serious.
