Question 1

Globalization has over the years become one of the aspects determining both economic and cultural development in different parts of the globe. It has had significant effects on various areas of human life including methods of communication, transport and the foods consumed. Traditionally, human beings depended heavily on nature for all their meals and only ate healthy foods (Ukonu, 2016) However, after the industrial revolution, most western countries introduced alternative techniques of sourcing, producing and distributing different diets. Over the years, the fast foods production and consumption have continued to increase as in different parts of the world due to globalization and the ease of distributing these commodities.

Primarily, fast foods entail quick preparation, packaging, distribution, and consumption. Alternatively, I can be explained as speedily prepared foods that are sold at reasonable prices for customers that would like to either eat them at the restaurant or take it away. The industry has continued to display a steady increase over the years with a 5% growth in 2010 from 3% in 2009 (Ukonu, 2016). The continued growth of this sector has had a significant effect on people’s food choices in different parts of the globe. For instance, individuals now prefer consuming junky foods with little or no nutritional value as opposed to the healthy vegetables and fruits favored in the past.

Equally, people such as the Chinese are slowly deviating from their traditional diet that was considered to have high medical value and taken on special occasions to easily prepared foods. Most outlets are positioned in strategic areas such as terminals, schools roadsides, and motorways to attract customers. These developments have narrowed people’s food choices and limited them to cheap and ready diets that have slowly increased health hazards especially among the young generation (BBC, 2016). As opposed to ancient times when different foods were only consumed on special occasions to demonstrate certain traditions, individuals now prefer to take diets that have no social or cultural importance.

Question 2

Risks

The constant growth of the fast food industry and its introduction of foreign markets has a significant impact on various aspects of the human population. First, these diets have low nutritional value thus subjecting people to the danger of malnutrition and the development of nutrition-related complications such as rickets. Most of them have very little fiber, and vitamin content and their increased consumption hinder the proper functioning of the body.

Increased consumption of fast foods is also associated with the growing incidence of different chronic illnesses such as stroke, obesity, types two diabetes, cardiovascular complications and cancer (Food Revolution Network, 2017). Most of these diets have a high content of fats with high levels of calories that block an individual’s arteries that may result in heat failure. Other health concerns brought by these foods include brain fog, mood swings, anxiety, aggression, and violence. Additionally, the consumption of these foods has also led to cultural degradation among different people around the world. In continents such as Asia and Africa, the consumption of traditional meals that had high nutritional content is slowly decreasing. This risks the erosion of specific values and norms of people in the foreign markets and encourages the spread of western world ways of life.

Benefits

The spread of fast food industry in foreign markets around the world also has several advantages to people in these areas. For instance, it has helped in increasing job opportunities in these countries. Many companies such as McDonald and Starbucks have opened several branches across Europe, Africa, and Asia and employed a significant number of people from these areas. Equally, the growth provides healthy options to choose from at affordable prices. Emerging firms such as chipotle are slowly deviating from the production of commodities such as burgers and hotdogs and have engaged in the production of healthy Mexican foods such as organic salads.
