Reward is the benefit that workers are offered in recognition for their job performance. Employees often have reward expectations when newly recruited into a company. Therefore, it is important to communicate reward provisions and arrangements prior so that workers know what to expect. There is a unique way in which each organization rewards it employees. A considerable number of organizations recognize reward as any cash benefit or incentive offered to an employee to motivate them to improve performance. However, other organizations reward their employees using other ways that do not include provision of cash benefits. Rewarding employees using ways other than cash motivates them to improve performance towards the achievement of organizational goals.

The article outlines myriad ways of rewarding employees. Foremost, I feel that giving the employees a day off can positively boost their morale. In fact, it is appropriate when they are allowed to select the off day. I have witnessed this method work in organizations handling large projects. Workers are motivated to work extra hours to finish a project in time and free-up a day to relax with family and friends. Consequently, as a manager it is significant to offer employees some form of special breakfast as a reward. In this case, the manager, in a show of courtesy and respect, serves his or her employees breakfast. Armstrong (2007) contend that a show of courtesy and respect by senior managers automatically integrate them as team players in organizational setting. For that matter, the employees can be motivated to the extent of developing freedom to consult line managers at will.

Moreover, I believe that hiring a life coach to mentor staff can be the best reward that a worker can receive. I have seen cases where workers experience challenges in accomplishing complex tasks. Hence, it is important to support them both physically, mentally, and professionally through a life coach. Michalowicz (2013) recommends that planning such mentorship programs should look as a reward and not portray an intention of fixing certain inefficiencies. In this way, the confidence of an employee can positively increase to enhance performance.

Furthermore, I have witnessed cases where organizations introduce employee of the month recognition awards. Michalowicz (2013) affirms that this reward system can work well if the employees take the award seriously if attached with other perks like reserving specific packing slots for best performers. In my view, employees can compete to be recognized in subsequent months to match their colleagues. Finally, Michalowicz (2013) reveals an important method of rewarding an employee; celebrating their birthdays. It is important to remember employees and once in a while surprise them with a birthday party, lunch or gift. Celebrating birthdays is a way that an organization values and appreciates the performance of an employee.

There are ways that can never motivate me. For instance, ‘dinner with the boss’ and ‘guess the baby’ events. I often live a private life and may not feel comfortable dragging my family to issues of work. Hence, I may not be able to participate in a fun event where my baby is involved. In addition, I have special fear, respect, and reservation for my boss and may feel uncomfortable having dinner while discussing issues outside of work.

All in all, rewarding and motivating employees is an important human resource function. Employees can have the required skills, knowledge and experience to perform but fail to perform well. Therefore, managers can find appropriate ways to reward them without using cash that can implicate additional operation costs. The simple things that people take for granted can work well to encourage and empower workers to perform at their highest peak. With appropriate reward systems, an employee can potentially feel proud to be associated with a company.
