Communications Essays on Small Group

I belong to two main groups; group 1A and Walter support group. Group 1A is task based on problem solving. This is a class work group whereby I interact with other group members from my class to solve a problem. The problem-solving process involves discussions, actions and making decisions that ensure we move from an undesired situation to the desired situation. The first example is whereby we were assigned a project to propose strategies to curb water shortage in the region. Therefore, as a group, we had to divide the task amongst us and assign each person his or her own part. The process began with defining the problem, analyzing it, generating possible solutions, evaluating the solution and choosing the best solutions. The purpose of this group assignment was to develop strategies that would help solve the problem of water shortage. As a problem-solving group, there is a common goal that all members with different responsibilities work towards achieving it.

Problem-solving groups generate more ideas through the division of work among the members. Every member plays a different role in the group. These principles similarly apply to our group, therefore, making it a problem-solving group. The second example, problem-solving group members have similar characteristics. Our group consists of my classmates only. Therefore, as a tasked based problem-solving group, we have common characteristics that enhance our group communication. For instance, we had a project on ways to improve student performance in universities. The process started with discussion through a nominal group technique that guided us through idea generation and evaluation. This elicits equal participation and contribution by all the group members. Finally, a problem-solving group set a consensus rules whereby as group members, we agree on the same decision after the discussions.
