Standards development is important in guiding decision-making process and practice, and plays significant role in evaluation of performance. It is a continuous process and subject to regular changes, and hence professionals must stay up to date with the developments in their professional field. Staying updated in developments in standards of operation is critical in improving quality and performance. As such, HIM professionals use different techniques to ensure they stay current on policies applicable to their field. Some of these include the use of published medical literature, peer to peer interactions, participating in conferences and continuous medical education.
Published medical literature in form of journals, policy papers and policy briefs is the primary method that is used by professionals to receive updated information. They also play crucial role in standard development. By reading journal, health professionals remain updated on changes in practice, both locally and internationally.
Peer-to-Peer interactions plays significant role in continuous professional development. This is achieved through sharing information either face-to-face or through social media platform. This peer-to-peer interaction remains an important avenue because it also allows dissemination of information from other avenues, for instance from conferences and training. Advancement in medical technology enhances Peer-to-peer interaction since professionals are able to use and install medical apps in their mobile phones and computers (Vincent, 2015). This has made information readily accessible.
Participating in conferences in another strategy that allows professionals to receive current information from experts. Additionally, they create conducive environment for learning and dissemination information. Through the conferences, professionals are able to build their professional network and this is important in peer-to-peer interaction.
Another significant method being used is the Continuous Medical Education. This strategy makes learning a continuous activity, thereby enhancing knowledge and competencies of the professionals (Prime Time, 2018). Moreover, continuous education advances the knowledge of employees and provide platform for disseminating information, and where employees are able seek clarification.
Lastly, Decision-supporting tools help professionals to remain current. An example of Decision-supporting tools includes published algorithms in guidelines, and specific information relating to standard of practice that guides decision making process (Prime Time, 2018). They are a broader initiative being employed in continuous professional development strategies.
